Jul 8, 2011 · You program the car, not the fob; but yes any Mazda 3 compatible fob (same signal, same frequency) can be programmed and should work immediately after programming. Sep 13, 2023 · If you disengage the mode (I believe it’s pressing the lock button four times followed by holding the lock button for a few seconds to turn off power saving) then the key should return to normal function. The manual on my 2017 Mazda3 says the battery only lasts a year. $3.50 for 2 years for a battery sounds about right for a newer car they are "on" all the time so that is getting your money's worth out of the gate. I just got a 2017 Mazda 3 - the manual says the expected battery life "is about one year".

I found a TSB for the Mazda 3 with the same fob. Apparently our newer fobs default to sleep mode after a battery replacement.

Also, in my '11 speed3, there was a cover over the physical ignition switch. It was located on the right side of the column and you can use the key to pop it out. My key battery would only last about 1 yr. I've found the batteries in Mazda 3 fobs to die quickly (less than 2 yrs).
