They cost this much, not because they are "designer" but because they have proprietary alloys of steel that often are available only in specific regions of the world.

Lie-Nielsen makes some good socket chisels that I haven't used, but if there is a brand name that I would rely on that is it. I have a set of Barr cabinetmakers chisels that are tough and very good, if a bit on the bulky side.
