The Sony Open effectively starts the chase for a PGA Tour card — only 100 from the FedEx Cup this year, down from 125, marking the most significant change in eligibility in some 40 years.

Matsuyama is among six players in the top 10 on the money list and 12 among the top 15 who are playing in the Sony Open, which begins on Jan. 9 at the Waialae Country Club. More than 60 percent of the no-cut field at The Sentry made it a Hawaiian doubleheader by entering the Sony.
