Voters rejected Ohio Issue 1 Tuesday, choosing to stick with the status quo instead of setting up a new citizen commission

Voters will decide whether to give citizens the power to draw congressional and state legislative districts − a ballot measure called Ohio Issue 1.

Issue 1, Ohio’s Citizens Not Politicians constitutional amendment aimed at wresting control of drawing legislative district maps away from elected officials, was defeated Tuesday night. AP called the race around 11:30 p.m. With 90% of precincts reporting, the issue failed with 54% voting no.

Ohio voters rejected a constitutional amendment Tuesday that would have established a citizen-led redistricting commission to replace an existing mapmaking system that repeatedly produced unconstitutional maps.

Ohioans have voted in majority to keep the redistricting process the same in the state, the Associated Press projects.

This means we keep the current setup, where elected politicians in Ohio make up the state’s redistricting commission which draws the map. Opponents argued the amendment would require districts to be gerrymandered — or manipulated to favor one party.
