Commuters are being warned of icy roads and travel disruption, as temperatures plummeted again overnight across the UK. Fresh weather warnings have been issued, with snow, ice and fog forecast across southern England, Wales, Northern Ireland and northern Scotland on Thursday.

As areas of Greater Manchester woke up to a blanket of snow on Thursday morning, Manchester Airport said that it had to close its runways for the fourth day since Sunday. At 9am on January 9, the airport announced that the runways were temporarily closed “due to significant levels of now” to allow the maintenance teams to clear them.

Travel disruption to road and rail services are likely on Thursday in areas with yellow warnings, as well as the potential for accidents in icy places, the Met Office has said.

The A555 Manchester Airport relief road also remains shut following the recent flooding and icy weather. While several schools have remained closed. A statement by the airport reads: "Our runways are closed due to significant levels of snow, as our teams work hard to clear them as quickly as possible.

The Met Office urges people to leave extra time to make required trips and plan routes carefully.
