Carmaker Stellantis said Thursday it would halt production of the electric version of its emblematic Fiat 500 in Italy due to weak demand, a move that comes as EV sales have slowed in Europe.

Stellantis and Volkswagen suffered significant falls in new-car registrations in August, contributing to a sharp overall decline in the European Union, as demand weakened in key markets and electric-vehicle sales fell.

Suspension of production will start today (Friday 13 September) and run for four weeks, Stellantis said, adding it was 'working hard to manage at its best this hard phase of transition'.
