The BMC has halted construction activities in Borivali East and Byculla area of the city owing to poor air quality

Mumbai: Amid rising air pollution in the city, the BMC has issued a directive to halt all construction activities, both private and public, in Byculla and Borivali (East) within the next 24 hours. This action follows the consistent recording of Air Quality Index (AQI) levels above 200,

Data released by the Central Pollution Control Board at 4:00 pm indicated 'moderate' air quality for Mumbai with an index value of 121 while Navi Mumbai stood at 101. Neighbouring Thane ranked slightly lower in the 'satisfactory' category with an AQI of 150.

Mumbai witnessed a significant decline in air quality with areas like Byculla and Worli recording high AQI levels due to pollutants like PM10 and PM2.5. Civic authorities have urged residents to take precautionary measures and stressed the need for immediate pollution control to improve air quality standards.

All construction works - private as well as public - have been suspended with immediate effect in Borivali East and Byculla, where the AQI has consistently breached the 200-mark over the past few days.

BMC has introduced new guidelines to combat Mumbai's worsening air pollution, including road dust cleaning, water sprinklers at construction sites, and stricter rules on waste burning and debris transport.
