Officials have confirmed the cause of Monday's pipeline explosion, fire in La Porte. Energy Transfer has set up a helpline for Deer Park residents.

A large pipeline fire broke out Monday afternoon in the La Porte community as residents were told to evacuate or shelter in place.

Houston, we have a problem. A fire that ignited on Monday at a pipeline east of downtown Houston is big enough for astronauts to view from space. As the fire near Deer Park and La Porte continued to burn Tuesday morning,

"The fire continues to burn itself out this morning, which is the safest way to manage the incident," the City of Deer Park said.

The fire shot orange flame and then black smoke hundreds of feet into the air, prompting authorities to evacuate nearly 1,000 homes.

Firefighters in the Houston suburb of La Porte have been working to extinguish a pipeline fire that forced residents to evacuate some areas. The explosion happened at a valve station owned by Energy Transfer Corp.
