Tuskegee University is hiring eight police officers for round-the-clock patrols of the campus following the early Sunday morning mass shooting that resulted in one death and injuries to 16 others, the university’s president announced Thursday.

A newly unsealed federal complaint says a man accused of having a machine gun at Tuskegee University admitted to firing his weapon during a weekend shooting, but denied shooting at anyone.

Tuskegee University President Mark A. Brown called a 3 p.m. news conference Thursday to announce plans for increased security on what is now a “closed campus.”
