The Tolls By Mail Enhancement Act, which was passed by the legislature and signed by Gov. Kathy Hochul last year, outlines those who don't pay tolls could be permanently or temporarily banned from traveling on the Thruway system, the New York State Thruway Authority states.

WTEN reports a new regulation adopted by the NYS Thruway Authority allows the agency to “exclude” people from driving on the state’s 570-mile Thruway system, temporarily or permanently, if tolls are not paid. The measure aims to recoup an estimated $40 million in unpaid tolls from 2023.

The loss is particularly problematic because tolls and related fees make up more than 90% of the Thruway Authority’s total revenue each year.

The New York State Thruway Authority has lost $631,000 in revenue this year from motorists hiding or altering their plates from tolling cameras, a 55% surge from 2023.
