The Supersonics have been out of Seattle since 2008, when they were relocated to Oklahoma City to become the Thunder. However, the agreement stipulates that the Sonics’ history, including their 1979 NBA Championship and retired jerseys, will be ceded back to Seattle if the city is awarded a new NBA team.

Since the Thunder made the move to Oklahoma City, creating its own history was always a priority. Of course, the team inherited Kevin Durant, which was quite the starting point, but had to create everything from the ground up after that.

The Thunder have made a name for themselves outside of the SuperSonics’ shadow so returning the franchise history should be painless.
