A natural gas liquids (NGL) pipeline owned by Energy Transfer caught fire in La Porte, Texas, on Monday morning, the company said in a statement, knocking out power to thousands of homes and businesses and prompting a widespread evacuation.

A flame that towered over a southeast Houston suburb has subsided but continues to burn following a massive pipeline explosion after a vehicle drove through a fence and struck an above-ground valve

Over 36 hours after the blast — which shot towering flames like a blowtorch above the suburbs of Deer Park and La Porte — authorities have provided few details about the circumstances leading up to the explosion.

The fire shot orange flame and then black smoke hundreds of feet into the air, prompting authorities to evacuate nearly 1,000 homes.

"The fire continues to burn itself out this morning, which is the safest way to manage the incident," the City of Deer Park said.
