A Royal Navy warship was deployed to shadow a Russian submarine through the English Channel. HMS Iron Duke monitored Novorossiysk, a Kilo-class submarine, and Evgeny Churov, its supporting tug, as it passed through the Channel and the North Sea at the start of the month.

A member of Royal Navy personnel has died after a helicopter ditched in the Channel during a night-flying exercise. There were three crew members on board at the time of the incident and two of them were rescued and taken to hospital, the Ministry of Defence said.
