It happened in the 2600 block of Fairview Street just before 1:15 p.m., department officials said. Officers responded to the area, KPD said, after hearing about a man armed with an axe who was reportedly drunk and had smashed the window of a car parked on the road.

A man who was armed with an axe was taken to the hospital after being shot by officers, according to Knoxville Police. The circumstances leading up to the shooting are being investigated by the agents with Tennessee Bureau of Investigation at the request of Knox County District Attorney General Charme Allen.
